OnRobot Gecko Grippers

Jan 24, 2019
OnRobot Gecko Grippers
OnRobot, a global leader in end-of-arm tooling for collaborative robots, announced today it will be co-exhibiting next month with Futura Automation at the ATX West show, in Anaheim, CA, February 5-7. OnRobot kicked off the new year by delivering pre-orders of its newly-available Gecko Gripper, that takes millions of micro-scaled fibrillar stalks that adhere to a surface using powerful van der Waals forces — the same way that geckos climb. On show for the first time at the ATX Show, the Gecko Gripper lets robots pick up flat, smooth objects with major energy savings over existing grippers such as vacuum grippers, which need compressed air that is costly, power-intensive, and bulky. The Gecko Gripper connects with any type of robot and can pay for itself in eight months in cost savings for electricity to compress air alone. Now being sold to manufacturing companies worldwide, the Gecko Grippers can affix to a wide range of surfaces such as fragile items that vacuum grippers can't handle. The Gecko Gripper also offers competitive advantages over electrostatic grippers, which are weaker and demand high-voltage systems to operate.

'The intelligent force feedback provided by the gripper's sensors will also help operators in adjusting their applications for optimal design and positioning.'

Inspired by Nature
Based on the nimble gecko lizards native to the Southern Hemisphere, in its initial design the Gecko Gripper evolved from a Stanford research project to the NASA Jet Propulsion Lab to industry through several partnerships. The original NASA use-case was for salvaging and restoring satellites including solar panels, given the Gecko Gripper's unique ability to operate in a vacuum. Perception Robotics introduced the first industrial grippers with new plastic research that increased gripping strength by 5X. Perception was then obtained by OnRobot, which is dedicated to developing and commercializing innovation that helps manufacturers take full advantage of collaborative robotics.

'The market reaction to the Gecko Gripper has been extremely positive,' says Kristian Hulgard, OnRobot's General Manager for Americas. 'We see the gripper now challenging traditional application and material handling design in a wide range of delicate tasks such as picking up porous and fragile objects like PCB boards,' says Hulgard, explaining that the Gecko Gripper excels at picking up objects with holes that vacuum grippers cannot address as they lose suction when air passes through openings in the object.

In addition to the Gecko Gripper, OnRobot will have its RG2-FT on display at ATX, a new gripper now generally available to manufacturers around the world. An update to OnRobot's first edition, the RG2-FT now has built-in force/torque sensing, supporting work in piece detection and centering. With inbuilt 6 axis F/T and proximity laser sensors at the fingertips, the RG2-FT is the first intelligent gripper on the market that can see and feel objects, thus ensuring faster deployment of collaborative applications and ultimately higher productivity.

'The RG2-FT gripper is a sophisticated—yet entirely accessible—new piece of technology that manufacturers with tasks such as assembly, insertion, and quality inspection are now requesting,' says Hulgard. 'The intelligent force feedback provided by the gripper's sensors will also help operators in adjusting their applications for optimal design and positioning.'

The rotation and swivel of the next generation

The rotation and swivel of the next generation
SCHUNK has expanded its portfolio with two rotary modules for automation, ushering in a new era of rotary motion. This can certainly result to speculation about how rotating and swiveling will progress and where the potential lies.Be it high loads or short cycle times - rotary modules and swivel units are always under pressure to provide even better performance when it comes to controlling and set up. In recent years, the competence leader for gripping systems and clamping technology, SCHUNK, has systematically increased its standard program for rotary movements, creating particularly dynamic, intelligent and adaptable components. The latest addition to the pneumatic segment is the SCHUNK SRM. The high-performance swivel unit outshines even the top seller SCHUNK SRU-plus and could soon lead the way as the new standard in pneumatic swiveling up to 180°.

Combined gripping and rotating with 24V

The world's most compact SCHUNK EGS electric gripping and swivel unit, enables constant rotation of the gripper without electrical feed-through. Pre-loaded junction roller guides which are free from play ensure high-precision gripping and virtually constant gripping forces along the entire finger length. The rotary gripper module provided with standard connections is controlled either via fieldbus distributor or via digital I/O, meaning it is compatible with all common control systems and no additional costs and delivery times demanded to be taken into consideration for the peripherals. All of the control and power electronics for decentralized control of the motor are directly integrated into the module. There is no need for any device terminals like on pneumatic rotary gripper modules or drive controllers in the electrical cabinet. This conserves space and a great deal of time when planning, procuring and commissioning. Both the speed of rotation and the gripping force can be regulated in several stages directly on the module by means of rotary switches. Angles of rotation between 30° and 270° can be attained. These are set mechanically directly on the module. Monitoring is possible via inductive proximity switches. Since the module is exclusively equipped with stationary, brushless and thus wear-free 24V DC motors, and does not need movable cables, slip rings or shock absorbers, it increases the process stability and availability of assembly plants. The noise level also drops.

Co-act Scenarios in the Assembly of Industrial Components

Co-act Scenarios in the Assembly of Industrial Components
In the making of advanced gripping systems, a huge number of product versions are manufactured and provided in different batch sizes. So far, the grippers have been created manually on traditional assembly workstations. Associated with this are one-sided physical strain, the danger of injuries, for example during deburring, and comparatively high costs for purely manual activity. The goal of one HRC project at the SCHUNK Smart Factory was to use HRC systems to multiply employee flexibility, minimize workplace monotony, improve ergonomics and reduce manual cost per item.

Instead of completely automating processes, limited automation is currently gaining in benefit, in which the strengths of humans and the strengths of robotics are brought together synergistically. The driving makes behind human-robot collaboration (HRC) are easing the staff of disturbing or monotonous work steps, improving ergonomics in the workplace, especially against the background of demographic change, making work processes more flexible, boosting efficiency and optimizing logistics, handling and loading processes. This need for change also affects the production of SCHUNK, the competence leader for gripping systems and clamping technology.

Universal Robots Offers Rapid Response Delivery
Ann Arbor, November 19, 2018: With the booming economy and low unemployment, manufacturers of all sizes are struggling to fill repetitive and undesirable manufacturing work. With the help of the Section 179 tax deduction, US businesses may be able to significantly stretch their use-it-or-lose-it 2018 budgets and purchase collaborative robots to take on the repetitive manufacturing jobs that workers don't want. Section 179 requires that qualified equipment and off-the-shelf software is purchased and placed into service by December 31, 2018, but with its distinctive quick-ship program , Universal Robots (UR) can make that happen. The company is asserting that qualified orders received and processed by December 16, 2018 will be delivered by the end of the year.

'Manufacturers are fighting to fill jobs so they can meet their production demands, and many can't turn to traditional automation, which is too expensive and complex, especially for small and mid-sized businesses,' says Stuart Shepherd, Regional Sales Director of Universal Robots Americas division. 'UR co-bots are cost-effective and easy to implement, and with the Section 179 tax deduction they can be even more inexpensive. Businesses should contact their tax consultant right away to see if they can take advantage of this opportunity, and we'll do our part to help them meet eligibility requirements.'

The National Association of Manufacturers reports a record-breaking 506,000 open jobs in July 2018, and a study from the Manufacturing Institute and Deloitte projects that 2 million jobs within the industry will go unfilled by the year 2025. To address this gap, manufacturers of all sizes are implementing automation resources such as cost-effective, flexible, safe and easy-to-use collaborative robots (co-bots). At the same time, many companies have use-it-or-lose-it equipment budgets. The Section 179 tax deduction is an easy way to pull those year-end budgets to meet automation goals. Section 179-qualified financing and leasing agreements can help businesses save even more (consult your tax expert for details).
